Question

What is the issue?

Answer:

Blanchard Mountain was first logged at the end of the 1800's and into the early 1900's.  It was privately owned, then abandon, by its owner. Eventually Blanchard Mountain was taken over by the State of Washington. It has a somewhat  rare status as a small portion of the revues that come from DNR managed logging cuts go to a few local entities like the Burlington School District. (An average of about $ 69,000.00 a year for their maintenance fund)

Blanchard Mountain gives users easy access as its located just off on the I-5 Alger exit and Chuckanut Drive.  Each year over 45,000 recreation users are currently using Blanchard Mountain for hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding, hang gliding, wilderness photography and much more. Its easy to see that there is a large public demand to save this place for recreation and the valuable economic side effects that benefits the local economy.

People from Skagit Valley to Seattle and even BC visit the Mountain which creates a, low impact long term economic value that will only grow.     (See Business Pulse Story)
Logging has a high impact on the mountain while providing a short term boom and bust economic effect.

Question
What would we like to see done with this beautiful forest?

Answer:   Lets Make Blanchard Mountain a permanent Recreational Area!
We would like to see Blanchard Mountain become a  permanent recreational area that welcomes the recreational users that currently use this special place. This includes hikers, mountain bikers, hang gliders, para gliders, horse riders and other low impact recreational users that we typically see on the Mountain. We all come to the mountain for its scenic beauty which must be preserved.

Question
How can we save Blanchard Mountain without diminishing local revenues that are currently received by the local community from logging revenues?

Answer:

By utilizing the Washington State Trust Land Transfer program.

See the Nature Conservancy's  description of the State Trust Land Transfer program by clicking here.
